ARMANDO TESTA
Sign and Advertising
Armando Testa (Turin, 23 March 1917 – Turin, 20 March 1992) was an Italian designer, cartoonist and painter.
Armando Testa was a well-known designer, cartoonist and graphic artist in the advertising industry. His winning traits were minimalist graphics and punchy taglines. The advertising agency he created is still one of Italy’s leading agencies in terms of turnover and business.
Testa was introduced to a career in the art world by the abstract painter Ezio D'Errico, whom he met at the Vigliardi-Paravia School of Graphic Design. It also was D’Errico who introduced him into the world of modern art.
His work, sometimes frenetic, even extended to the social sphere, as he worked on advertising campaigns for Amnesty International and the International Red Cross.
Among the many characters he created during his epic career, worthy of particular mention are the Mexican pistol-toting Mysterious Caballero, and his lover Carmencita, who starred in a famous “Carosello” television commercial for a blend of Lavazza coffee, popular during the 1970s.
Other commercials linked to Testa — often produced by companies from his native city, Turin — include ads for Antonetto liqueur, Peroni beer, Philco TV sets, Borsalino hats, Facis clothing, Sasso oil, Punt e Mes cocktails, Pirelli, and Simmenthal luncheon meat. Turin, Testa’s native city, honoured his minimalist style by dedicating a commemorative exhibition entitled “Less is more” to the artist in 2001, in the Rivoli Castle.
