DESIGN INDUSTRIALE

Design is an uncontrollable discipline constantly expanding, as if it wants to swallow up all of life itself, both tangible and intangible, from body design to web design.
If design was born with man, industrial design was born with the industry itself, and represents the interface between what society demands and what producers offer.

Over time the concept, approach and industrial design instruments have found applications in different industrial and production areas.
Through research, innovation and development, industrial design influences the engineering of products, services, visual communication, packaging, interior design and architecture; further, it guarantees functionality, adds social value and cultural significance to the items and services distributed on the market.

This process starts from the very first phase of exploration and generation of ideas known as "concept design", then evolves until the final product and its location on the market are defined.
The aim of Lavazza is to create a strong brand image.

For Lavazza, like others, the first item that can be traced back to the idea of industrial design became manifest after Luigi Lavazza bought an actual industrial machine in 1922: the Eureka electric roasting machine operating on gas combustion.
Increases in production volumes then made it necessary to address distribution and packaging. For this reason, in 1925 the packaging for first roasted coffee was designed using an innovative oil-sealed paper based material named "pergamin" that preserved the aroma and freshness of the coffee for a few days.

Today big reels of double layered foil with Gold and Red backgrounds serve as design objects, witnesses of Lavazza's current industrial dimension that involves grinding more than one and a half million packages of roasted coffee each day.
It is not by chance that photographer Jean Baptiste Mondino in his 2003 calendar chose to use Lavazza Oro foil to create a gorgeous dress, beautifully worn by a black model.

With Lavazza a new production and logistic system was born, that is now shared by all of its plants. Managed by Mokapak, it allows to control coffee packaging down to the smallest detail.
The production process is multi-faceted, and it required the factories to design a system just as complex to move the semi-finished materials, finished materials and packaging around, through a veritable maze of intersecting automatic transport systems, pneumatic conveyor belts running in all directions, including overhead, up and down elevators, and over roller beds. Although the development work was quite intensive, Lavazza was able to implement a system that allows for great freedom and flexibility of operation, to optimise product packaging and boxing.
